It's been a month of almost daily strong winds (and frequent storms), conditions that have wreaked havoc on the local trees and flowers, and in some parts of town on houses and cars as well! Severe thunderstorms are predicted yet again for today and tonight. And while we're very grateful to have thus far been spared the awful heat and devastating wildfires of our neighboring state of Colorado (and others), everyone is weary of the wind, even here in Wyoming where wind is ubiquitous...
But our wild weather has provided (or at least not prevented) many a photogenic sky! Last Sunday evening we noticed an especially colorful sunset developing (photography pun!) so I snapped a couple of photos from our front porch. And then kept snapping. And as the colors and clouds continued to change dramatically over the next 10-15 minutes or so, from soft, striped pastels to dramatic fiery reds and golds that set the horizon ablaze, BW and I couldn't resist putting on our walkin' shoes and heading west for a closer view (and less obstructed photos).
And so I present the results in "The Evolution of a Sunset" - the photos of our sky in the order they were taken that Sunday evening...
When we returned back home, we noticed the sunset was perfectly reflected in a neighbor's upstairs windows, making it look eerily as if their upper story were on fire...

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, happy SkyWatching, and a joyful
or Winter Solstice to our Southern Hemisphere friends! :-)
Enjoy captivating skies from both hemispheres at
What a perfect series!!! I really like the last one, the "fire" in the house!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Judy! I'm glad you enjoyed them! That last one does look a bit alarming, doesn't it? (Especially since there really was a house fire not too far from us yesterday!) But what an effect.
DeleteSuper summer solstice to you!!
ReplyDeleteThank you - and the very same right back atcha, veganelder! :-) xoxo
DeleteWhat a cool set of shots!! Soooo, that's Wyoming -- not too shabby. I agree with Judy about the last shot. The brightt street signs look almost like they are part of the houses--curious.
ReplyDeleteIf you mean Wyoming's skies, you're right - not too shabby!
DeleteI know, I hate that those signs usually show up when I take sky photos on the horizon in that direction, especially this time when my flash went off and really made them stand out! The school crossing sign can be especially obnoxious, and I have yet to see any kids cross there. (They're nearly all dropped off by school buses or their parents! Does no one walk to school anymore? "Back in MY day..." she said in her crotchety old lady voice... LOL)
If you could find employment as a sky photographer you'd be all set.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Maybe that Sky Mall magazine they have on airplanes would hire me. :-)
DeleteMagic sky shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Magic camera. :-)
DeleteWow, that last picture with your neighbor's house!! That's really something. I love those moments when you can capture something just right. That "wind sock" is funny and could certainly apply here, too. Lake Michigan always influences the wind, so we really savor any days that aren't really windy.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the shots, I think the 4th is my favorite, although they're all quite gorgeous. Love the changing colors!
I know it, right? I've seen their windows reflect sunsets before, but this was the first time it looked like a house fire! I love those moments too - I seem to usually just miss them!
DeleteIt sounded from the forecast yesterday that your state's chain windsocks would all be looking like that! That was some brutal weather that went through NE and SD, hope you got nothing like it there! We never had any severe thunderstorms like predicted (thank goodness), but last night we had the longest rumble of thunder I have ever heard! There was just the one, but it must have gone on for 30 seconds! And now it's very dark and gloomy out and quite cozy in. Wish I could just play on the computer today, I got some great photos yesterday during a morning "photo safari" - but we have to do laundry and clean house today, so we'll see...
That was my favorite too - I always go for the most colorful. :-)
Ooh and aah times seven. I have looked, and relooked and relooked again. No favourites - or rather seven favourites. Aren't the skies such a gift. Happy solstice to you, and have a wonderful colourful love filled weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat happens to me sometimes too, both on my blog and others (often yours!) when I just can't decide on a favorite photo. I even have trouble sometimes narrowing down my selected photos to a reasonable number (as you've no doubt noticed!) :-) I'm glad you enjoyed them all! And I send the same wishes to you! :-)
DeleteLovely shots of the summer solstice!
ReplyDeleteThank you! These were actually of a sunset a few days earlier, but they would have made a perfect summer solstice sunset (say THAT three times fast!) :-) Did you get to see the Super Moon last night (how cool it coincided with the solstice!), or did it ever get dark enough there? It was too overcast here, darn it. But at least we're getting rain we need.
DeleteHi! It's very interesting about the explanation of the Wyoming Wind Sock. Nice shots of The evolution of a Sunset. There are many beautiful photos. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I know - whomever made that sign had a clever sense of humor! :-) I'm glad you enjoyed my sunset photos, Minoru-san, thank you for stopping by!
DeleteSometimes it's impossible to tear your eyes away from the sunset. I love the last photo - it looks as though flames are leaping inside the house.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! It changes so quickly and lasts "so shortly," you dare not look away or you'll miss a beautiful moment!
DeleteI think if I'd been coming home from somewhere and seen that sunset reflected in MY windows, my heart might have been in my throat for a second or two! It really looked like their upstairs was ablaze.
Unique wind sock with a chain and a very beautiful sunset.
ReplyDeleteThat "Wyoming wind sock" was meant to be a joke - the wind does blow hard here, but not quite THAT hard (usually!) :-) I'm glad you enjoyed our colorful sunset!
Deletegorgeosu skeis. :)
ReplyDeleteYou asked about the little red building in my shot. It is used for the staff on kayaking competitions.
Thanks, NF, that's exactly what I thought it was! (Kidding! I would never have guessed that in a bazillion years!) :-)
DeleteHope you had a happy solstice! I love those sky pics...so many vibrant colors. The pic with the reflection in the house windows is cool too!
ReplyDeleteI guess it was the 22nd this year, in which case I spent it cleaning house and then hauling our comforter to the laundromat to wash and dry. Pretty standard Solstice celebration. LOL It sure didn't feel like the start of summer, it was cold and rainy most of the day, but the evening was beautiful!
DeleteThat sky really did put on a colorful show! And I wonder what our neighbors would think if they saw that photo of their house appearing to be in flames!
These photos are just plain fantastic. Novel idea filming a sunset in motion ;-).
ReplyDeleteThank you! (I still haven't figured out how to take videos with my Rebel! I'm terrible). :-)
DeleteUnbelievable photos. A favorite? That's not so easy. I enjoyed the photo of the house with the sunset reflected in the windows alot because that was soooo unusual. It really did look like fire! I bet it would be hard to even set up that shot - I imagine interior lights to be off and I'm really glad you noticed it and captured it.
ReplyDeleteOf the actual sunset photos, I like the second one the best. I love the stripes of different shades of gold and yellow. But the fourth photo is a close second. I like the addition of the red but too bad that big 'ole building got in the way!! :-)
Glad you liked them! The sky kept changing so much I ended up taking a lot of photos of it, and it was hard to choose which ones to post. I like your favorites and your comments on them! That "big ol' building" in the way is the elementary school, and it's the reason we took that walk to get some better photos, but then houses just got in the way. Maybe we need to go live near a west-facing beach! Hmmm... :-)
